April First is associated with funny things.
But this April is known to be a red letter day in transport circles.
The Government of India in notification no. GSR 522 (E) dated 15.2.2008 has fixed April First as a day for implementaion of BS IV type to all cities and BS III to Rest of India. The Govt. has phased out BS III vehicles from major cities including Chennai and from 1.4.2010 for registration the vehicle must be BSIV compliant in case if it is a metro like Chennai, Bangalore, etc. In rest of India the vehicle must be BS III compliant.
So a Maruthi 800, Ford Ikon, certain GM Vehicles, cannot be registered in Chennai whereas vehicles like TATA SFC 407 which are BS II compliant cannot be registered elsewhere. The vehicles must be converted as BS IV type if it is to be registered in metros like Chennai and BS II vehicles must be made as BS III if it is to be registered in other places.
We will have pollution free roads, in the near future.
